Data reveals that 3.5% of all births, results in congenital malformations, 20-30% in infant deaths are due to genetic disorders and 30-50% of neonatal deaths are due to congenital malformations. Optimizing proper pre conceptional care is crucial for improving the health outcomes of both the mother and the fetus. Pre conceptional care includes counseling, addressing social health factors, and implementing biomedical and behavioral interventions for women and their partners before pregnancy. Even in industrialized countries, fertility has delivered to lowest recorded levels recently. During the ancient period, in absence of diagnostic techniques and therapeutic interventions, Ayurveda has postulated various measures to minimize the risk during pregnancy and delivery.

According to Ayurveda, proper preparation of parents is an essential pre requisite for a healthy progeny. The physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being of couples, proper nutrition of the mother and practice of wholesome regimen play a prime role in achieving a healthy progeny. Negligence towards these may cause unhealthy and defective child birth.

Pre conceptional care is one of the main measures to get a healthy progeny. Micronutrient status has important role in fertility. Adequate levels are important for oocyte quality, maturation, fertilization and implantation. Ancient sages included different dietetic habits and medicated preparations in pre conceptional care which can able to correct the nutritional deficiency related issues. Purificatory methods and other treatment modalities adopted in Ayurvedic pre conceptional care seems to be a great contribute in preparing male and female body to produce healthy gametes by normalizing the hormonal levels and thereby begetting a healthy conception.

Mental faculties of parents are also making influence on fetus, which also mentioned in samhita. Rajaswala charya (Menstrual care) also a form of pre conceptional care which promotes the proper follicular growth and ovulation. Hence a planned pregnancy ensures the women to enter the pregnancy with optimal rate of health which would be safe to herself and fetus. Ayurvedic pre conceptional care along with proper antenatal care causes the elevation of physical, spiritual and psychological health status of fetus and thereby to train a personally high ranked future citizen from the uterine environment itself.
